Examples of Current Art: Olafur Eliasson

Eliasson has created a plethora of artworks over the years, notably one of my favourites Contact. However he has created a piece of public Art entitled Your Star which strikes as my main source of inspiration.

A helium balloon encased in aluminium hovers into the Stockholm’s Winter, night sky; shining a bright LED which was charged using solar panels from the previous Summer.

The idea of a single beacon of light (resembling a star) symbolises hope and achievement, celebrating a year of new knowledge.

Your Star is equally about the everyday inspiration and dreams that we should all nourish

I am fascinated in the idea of a light source as a positive yet unknown symbol. Key is the interaction with the audience, how we as humans envision light as a magnetic force. How can this relate to what I am creating?

A couple of notes for thought follows:

  • Beacon
  • Hope
  • Pure light of anonymity
  • Symbolic
  • The ‘image’ of single light capturing imagination
  • Focal point
  • Hypnotic/mesmerising
